Second edition · DemoSCOPE Norstat Research Grant

Call for Applications: Research grants for representative survey samples

We are pleased to announce the second edition of the DemoSCOPE Norstat Research Grant, supporting scientists conducting empirical research in Switzerland.

The grant gives researchers access to high-quality survey data by providing representative online survey samples from the Swiss population. Our aim is to support rigorous quantitative research and make professional survey infrastructure accessible to promising academic projects.

4Research grants
1x n = 1,000Respondents for the highest-rated application
3x n = 500Respondents for each of three further proposals
About the programme

Supporting rigorous empirical research

With the Academic Grant, we aim to enable scholars to realize empirical studies. By combining scholarly rigor with DemoSCOPE's expertise in survey development and data collection, the program seeks to enable high-quality quantitative research on issues relevant to Swiss society.

Research support

Grants:

The selected projects will receive access to survey samples from our online panel:

Four research grants will be awarded:

Three further proposals
n = 500

The jury selects three further research proposals for a research grant of n = 500 respondents.

Samples will be structured to represent the Swiss population according to predefined demographic quotas for age × gender × language region (German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland; Italian-speaking Switzerland optional). Minor deviations from the standard quotas may be possible upon agreement.

Grant recipients will operationalize and program the survey. DemoSCOPE will provide feedback on the survey duration, complexity, and feasibility to support fieldwork preparation. The survey will be conducted online with a survey duration of up to 10 minutes.

During a soft launch, the interview length will be validated, and initial data collected will provide insights into the quality of the survey. Following the soft launch, data collection will begin in the full launch of the survey.

The data collection process is monitored through DemoSCOPE to ensure data protection, quality controls, and data cleaning to provide a high-quality dataset for further scientific analysis.

Eligibility

Who can apply?

The call is open to scholars affiliated with universities and universities of applied sciences in Switzerland. Researchers from differe disciplines and methodological backgrounds are welcome to apply. We particularly encourage applications from PhD candidates and early-career researchers.

Proposals should have a clear empirical research question for which population-based survey data can provide meaningful evidence.

How to apply

Application process

Applicants must submit the Application Form and a one-page research outline in accordance with the Research Grant Application Guidelines. Please submit your application in English.

The Application Form and research outline must be submitted as two separate PDF documents by email to grant@demoscope.ch.

Application guidelines

Please review the application guidelines carefully and submit your application by 14 December 2026 to grant@demoscope.ch.

Formalities
  • Language: The application form and the research outline must be written in English.
  • Application form: The application form must be completed in full, including information on research funding, ethical concerns, and data management.
  • Research outline and anonymous review: To ensure an anonymous review process, do not include any personal information (e.g., names, affiliations, or contact details) in the research outline. Applicant details must be provided exclusively in the application form.
  • Required documents: Submit two separate PDF documents: the research outline and the completed application form. Name the file identical to the title of the research proposal:
    1. Application form_Title.pdf
    2. Research outline_Title.pdf
  • Page limit: The research outline must not exceed one page, excluding references (single-spaced, 12pt)
  • Zitierweise: Any established citation style may be used, provided it is applied consistently throughout the text and reference list.
  • Einreichungsfrist: Email both documents to grant@demoscope.ch by 14 December 2026.
Content of the Research Outline

The research outline should briefly and clearly cover the key elements of the research design. We recommend the following structure for the research outline. However, it may be adapted to suit the specific research design.

  • Common Ground: Introduce the research topic and situate it within the relevant research field.
  • Complication: Identify the research problem, highlight the existing research gap, and formulate the research question.
  • Concern: Explain why the problem is relevant and why addressing the identified research gap is important.
  • Course of Action: Describe the proposed research approach and how it will address the research question.
  • Contribution: Outline the expected theoretical contribution to the research field and the practical implications of the study.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
  • Panel recruitment: DemoSCOPE uses multiple online and offline channels, particularly telephone, to reduce self-selection bias and reach diverse population groups.
  • Languages: DE/FR (IT optional).
  • Acknowledgment and outreach: Credit “DemoSCOPE / Norstat Academic Grant” and submit a one-page summary within 3 months of fieldwork.
  • Redemption: Voucher valid for 9 months after receipt.
  • Further Questions: For any questions regarding the application or review process, please contact grant@demoscope.ch.
Selection

Evaluation process

Applications will be evaluated in two stages.

First round

First round: The DemoSCOPE research team will review all submissions to ensure that the proposed study

  • meets the formal application requirements;
  • is feasible within the available survey format and sample;
  • complies with applicable ethical and data-protection requirements;
  • can realistically be implemented within an online questionnaire of approximately 10 minutes; and
  • meets the expected quality standards for the research proposal.
Second round

Applications passing this initial screening will proceed to the scientific evaluation through an independent jury of scholars.

Second round: The scientific evaluation will follow a double-blind review process: proposals will be assessed without identifying information about the applicants, and the reviewers’ identities will not be disclosed to applicants.

The jury will assess the scientific quality and relevance of the research question, the appropriateness of the proposed methodology, the expected scientific contribution of the study, the implications for practice, and the effective use of the survey data provided through the grant.

Important dates

Announcement of the Research Grant recipients

The recipients of the Academic Grant 2026 will be announced 1st March 2027.

After selection, the DemoSCOPE team will work directly with successful applicants to refine the questionnaire, prepare the survey for fieldwork, and conduct data collection.
